Dear Friends and Neighbors,
With the 2026 legislative session now concluded, I look forward to meeting with you and sharing an update on the key decisions made in Olympia and what they mean for our communities. Although the session lasted just 60 days, its outcomes will shape Washington’s future for years to come.
That’s why my seatmates from the 17th District and I are hosting a series of in-person town hall meetings throughout April at various locations within the district, starting on April 7th. Sen. Paul Harris, Rep. Kevin Waters, and I will meet with constituents to review the many significant decisions made by the Legislature.
This year’s session was marked by major policy shifts, including new taxes, increased spending, and decisions that will impact families, employers, and local communities statewide. Among the most consequential actions was the approval of a state income tax by the majority party, following a 24-hour floor debate.
This policy represents a significant departure from Washington’s traditional tax structure. I remain concerned not only about its immediate effects, but also about the likelihood that it could expand over time, placing additional strain on working families and small businesses.
The Legislature also passed an operating budget exceeding $80 billion, continuing a trend of rapid government growth. This budget relies in part on uncertain revenue projections and reserve funds, raising questions about long-term sustainability. I believe we must take a more disciplined approach – prioritizing responsible spending and ensuring taxpayer dollars are used effectively.
In addition to the new state income tax and massive operating budget, these five town hall meetings will provide a great opportunity for you to ask questions, offer input and feedback, and have us address your concerns regarding state government.
